Sudbury, Ontario, April 4, 2008 — The Government of Canada is continuing to support worldclass research and innovation in Northern Ontario by investing in the Cryopit, a new underground research facility to be located adjacent to the existing SNOLAB. The Cryopit will help to broaden the research capacity of the SNOLAB, which is dedicated to the study of astroparticle physics.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today underlined the Government of Canada’s commitment to science and technology by announcing an investment of $6.1 million in the Cryopit. Of the total, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) will provide $5.6 million to support infrastructure costs, while an additional $500,000 in FedNor funding is earmarked for facility expansion and equipment purchases.
