SNOLAB Project Status

Updated: 11 Feb 2004

The preliminary engineering estimates of the underground facility are complete and the detailed design process has begun.  A request for Letters Of Interest has been sent to the physics community.  A Workshop is being organized to solicite physics requirements into the final design of the facility.  Exploratory drilling to determine the final location of the underground excavations is almost complete.  The design of the surface facility is complete and will be going to tender soon.

SNOLAB Layout
The  Phase I expansion of the  underground laboratory (shown in red) will include a "Cube Hall" for a large scale experiment  and a network of connected tunnels (drifts) for smaller scale experiments.
Phase II  would add a second large hall (shown in green).
Exploratory Drilling
Exploratory drilling to determine the optimal location of the new excavations.  The drilling is being done from the "bladder room" in the existing excavation.  This area will become part of the new laboratory entrance.
Surface Facility
The new 3 storey surface facility will house laboratories, clean rooms, offices, and meeting rooms to support the underground laboratory.  Construction is expected to begin in summer of 2004 with occupation in 2005.
